KERTEH: The RM13bil in Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the first quarter of this year is a clear signal of investors' confidence in Malaysia as an investment destination despite a gloomy global economy and the Opposition's criticims, says Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
The Prime Minister said foreign investors did not base their decisions on what the Opposition said.
"They choose Malaysia based on facts and in-depth assessments.
"Their selection of Malaysia is a vote of confidence on how we manage our economy.”
"We expect to hit our targeted FDI and private sector investments this year," he told journalists after officiating the groundbreaking ceremony for the world's first integrated bio-methionine and thiochemicals plant in Kertih BioPolymer Park here on Saturday.
Commenting on the groundbreaking of the bio-methionine and thiochemicals plant, Najib said the project, jointly developed by South Korea's CJ CheilJedang and France's Arkema, was a proud moment for Malaysia as it was the first of such plant in the world.
"The plant also marks the first major investment by an international industrial biotechnology company in the country. "It will position Malaysia alongside other global feed producers and exporters," he said adding that, the plant was expected to be operational by December next year and would have spillover economic effects. ..."The people in the surrounding areas can plant the 'petai belalang' and supply the biomass to the plant at an attractive price. ..."It will provide the people with continuous income and it does not necessarily have to be planted on a fertile ground," he said.
He also hoped the activity of planting petai belalang would be expanded nationwide based on the contract farming model.
Meanwhile, Arkema executive vice president Marc Schuller said Malaysia was chosen as it was an industrial- friendly country especially with its exceptional safety and environment standards.
"Malaysia is also centrally located and have high numbers of qualified workers. "Highly efficient government entities also offer attractive incentives for investors," he said.
CJ CheilJedang chief executive officer Kim Chul Ha said, "This is very significant day for CJ's Bio business in its 45-year history. "In many ways, it is the start of a new beginning for CJ," he said.
Meanwhile, the prime minister took time off from his work schedule here to attend the wedding of Nur Asdayana Ahmad, 27, and businessman Mohd Hafiz Adnan, 24, at Telok Kalong here. The bride is a daughter of Terengganu Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Said.
The prime minister also visited former five-term Kemasik assemblyman Datuk Abu Bakar Ali, 67, who is suffering from a nerve illness.
